Tom Fazio designed all 27 holes of golf at Callawassie that, when played in any of the 18-hole combinations, are intriguing, challenging, and easy on the eyes. The adjacent Colleton River provides plenty of streams and estuaries through the golf course to add to the challenge. The club's membership plan, while not unique, has been a stabilizing factor during times when the U.S. economy put pressure on discretionary spending (e.g. club membership dues). In 2001, Callawassie chose to "bundle" membership with the other mandatory fees of life in the 800-acre community. With the obligation of membership, the club was able to glide through the tough times and thrive in the good ones; the impeccable conditions on the 27 holes are indicative of a thriving club.
Most of the homeowners at Callawassie are year-rounders, about 80% of them, and therefore they get their money's worth from the club's activities. Most homes in the community are single-family configurations, but 38 villas are available to those who don't require as much space or want to use their Callawassie home seasonally. The community currently has a good choice of homes for sale, ranging from around $500,000 to $1.5 million, with many options in between. For those looking to build their dream home, a nice selection of lots begins at a reasonable $18,000, but $35,000 to $50,000 is more typical.
