Old Trail, Crozet, VA
Old Trail had a unique beginning. Before its third property was developed in 2005, the fledgling community played host to Noah's Ark -- well, actually, a giant replica of the ark. Location scouts for the movie Evan Almighty, which starred Steve Carrell, chose the wide-open Old Trail for the scenes of Noah loading beasts of burden and other animals onto the ark. Before residents moved in, elephants walked the streets of their community.
Evan Almighty fell way short at the box office, but Old Trail exploded in popularity almost from the beginning. It has turned into a thriving urbanist community that features all manner of homes -- single-family, townhomes, condos -- and shopping and dining options just a short walk for all residents. At its core is a 75-acre park which serves as a great meet and greet center. Befitting its name, the community encompasses walking trails well used by its residents.
Crozet is not a large town, but the popular university city of Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia, is just 20 minutes away, with all the medical care, shopping, restaurants and entertainment a major university typically attracts.
The Old Trail golf course, which opened before the initial sale of homes, features a few quirky holes and a links-like feel to most of the layout. The suirky holes may take some getting used to; they require placement shots before you get to the greens, making it seem as if you are playing more than just four par threes across the 18. But that does not detract from the overall leisurely round Old Trail provides.
