Few golf communities offer more activities than Rumbling Bald, located in (and on) Lake Lure in North Carolina. First and foremost, there is the manmade lake that dates back to 1927 and whose dramatic coves offer the perfect sites for homes with a view. Then, there are the two golf courses, separated by a few miles and distinctively different, although both a lot of fun to play. Bald Mountain golf course is narrow, its greens composed of bent grass, a turf option much beloved by golfers, and typically not found south of the Mason-Dixon line. The Apple Valley golf course, just down the road from the resort's front gate, presents an entirely different challenge, with large and swirling greens that make a solid short game the key to a low score.
Rumbling Bald is filled with diversions for the young and old alike, and most of them are co-located next to the beach, which attracts families on vacation as well as a fair share of retired residents who prefer a placid lake to saltier, more active ocean water. On and around the lake are two pools, one indoor and one outdoor, beautifully surfaced tennis courts, a horseshoe pit, an imaginative playground and, of course, all the water-related boating options a large lake offers (except for jet skis, which are not permitted because of noise and the potential for injury). Add a fully equipped fitness center located next door to the pools and there is not much more an active retiree or young family could ask for.
