The “community” that abuts much of the Founders Club golf course is more a neighborhood than a developed golf community. What that means for bargain-hunting golf home shoppers are lower prices with access to virtually all the amenities of a typical “golf community” (but no homeowner’s association dues).
Those amenities start with a fascinating golf course layout that will inspire shot-makers undeterred by numerous waste bunkers. Originally designed by noted southern architect Gene Hamm in 1966, it was called Sea Gull Golf Course for its proximity, as the sea gull flies, from the Atlantic Ocean. The layout is the fourth oldest on the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach and the farthest south. In 2006, the layout underwent a major renovation by Thomas Walker, re-emphasizing its links-like terrain and large green complexes. It is still a favorite of local golfers. And as part of the Founders International Golf Group, members of the semi-private Founders golf course have access to the company’s 22 other courses in the area – at discount prices.
The community is less than 10 miles from the historic town of Georgetown, which has plenty of modern services, including a well-ranked hospital, plenty of seafood and other restaurants, three supermarkets and a large Walmart. For at home cooks, Georgetown Seafood and The Shrimp Dock offer freshly caught ocean bounties. Myrtle Beach International Airport is less than 45 minutes; Charleston’s airport, a fine alternative, is just over an hour. Current re-sale homes for sale in the adjacent neighborhood are priced from the $350s but, if you are looking for a brand-new home, building lots typically come on the market in the mid $100s.
